Dr Andrew Apel is the inaugural Chairman of ION and is a great advocate for the independence of ophthalmology and the doctor-patient relationship.

He is also a practicing doctor and former chairman of the Queensland Eye Hospital , Australia's largest standalone ophthalmic surgery day hospital, which has 30 visiting ophthalmologists and is based on the independent autonomous co-operative model.

He completed his ophthalmology training in Brisbane. He undertook a two year Corneal and External Diseases Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada from 1992-1994, working at the Hospital for Sick Children and the Toronto Hospital.

Dr Apel has over ten years experience in treating medical and surgical corneal and external diseases, and contact lens fitting. He is an expert in corneal transplants, cataract extraction and intra-ocular lens implants, combined cataract and glaucoma operations, pterygium excisions with conjunctival autografts, and anterior segment trauma repair and ocular surface tumour surgery.

His paediatric expertise includes neonatal cataracts and corneal transplants as well as limbal excision and lamellar grafts, cataract extraction, posterior chamber lens implantation and trauma repair in older children.

His patients are referred from General Practitioners, Optometrists and other Medical Specialists from all over Australia.

Dr Andrew Apel also performs refractive surgery using all the currently available procedures including LASIK and astigmatic keratotomies at the Excimer Laser Vision Centre.

He is an Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME) for CASA and examines the ocular health of Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers.
